We have not been to every establishment in the area but here a few of the places worth mentioning. Trip Advisor has some fairly extensive reviews too. It is worth ringing ahead to check opening times and availability.


Eating Places in Alnwick


The Plough a bar and restaurant, just outside the “gate” into the town centre, near the playhouse, is good and has up to date décor. It has bar and restaurant menus.

Caffe Tirreno, excellent value Italian just outside the “gate” into the town centre, opposite The Plough. You cannot book, just turn up and take your chances.

Lilburns in the alley between Market Square and Narrowgate, is well established and does good food throughout the day and evening.

The Art House. On Market Street. We haven’t been but it has good reviews in the visitors’ book.




Yans. Chinese restaurant and take away on Market Street. Friends say it’s great but apparently there is a long wait for a take away.

Prima Deli, a café on the market square, excellent coffee, Italian snacks and antipasti. Not really a restaurant but good for a quick bite.


Pubs in Alnwick


The John Bull. Our Local. Go half way down the gravel drive and through the gate in the fence on your left. Go straight down hill and you will see the pub on your left. Selection of real ales and no frills.

The Running Fox, Felton is a café and bakery, which is open for breakfast and lunch. Huge portions and great bread- ask for a doggy bag!

The Jolly Fisherman, Craster a newly refurbished pub, has a well known local chef and good reviews. It is also easily combined with a coastal walk.

The Ship, Low Newton by the Sea, is a great stop on a coastal walk. You cannot book, but once you get a table you’ll not want to leave! They brew their own beer – Oz Clark and Rory McGrath came here on their TV program.

The Joiners Arms, Newton by the Sea, undergone a transformation in recent years and is now spacious, child friendly and generally very busy at weekends, so book ahead.

The Barn at Beal. Sympathetically converted farm buildings have made a fine eating place with lovely views of Holy Island. Seasonal food with an emphasis on local produce. A good stopping point while waiting for the tides on Holy island, it is a mile before the causeway .
